Postcard: Boracay, Philippines

In the past few years the small island Boracay in the Philippines has ridden a global wave of media attention to become one of the world’s top island destinations.

  • It is located in the Western Visayas approximately 315 kilometres south of Manila and about 0.8 kilometres off the northwest tip of Panay Island.
  • The island is 7 km long and 1 km wide and covers only 10km².
  • Boracay consists of three barangaysor districts: Yapak on the northern end, Balabag in the middle, and Manoc-Manoc in the south.
  • The island is known for its powdery white sand and gorgeous, pristine beaches.
  • Apart from its white sand beaches, Boracay is also famous for being one of the world’s top destinations for relaxation.
  • The main tourism beach is the 4 km long White Beach.
  • The best season to experience the island and its beaches are from December to May, the dry season in the Philippines.
  • Boracay is also known for having the country’s best island nightlife.
  • One of the most popular attractions in Boracay are mermaid lessons.
  • The Philippine government is taking serious steps to preserve the beauty and natural resources in Boracay. That is why in 2018 the island was placed in “rehab,” closed for 6 months to ease the strain on its fragile environment and fix the infrastructure and carrying capacity.
  • Boracay is consistently named as one of the best islands in the world by international travel magazines.
